Whatsapp is the world’s most popular instant messaging app with more than a billion monthly active users. With its video calling feature across all platforms, it is competing with Face Time and Google Duo. There are many other features and last but not the least, the video calls are encrypted similar to the calling features. Last week, the app turned seven years old. However, if you are a heavy user of WhatsApp and a huge fan of your old smartphone, there is a need to abandon your antiquated phone. This is because WhatsApp support is not applicable on iOS, Android and Windows Phone from the next year i.e. 2017. This news comes after the whatsApp messenger celebrated its seventh anniversary. On this occasion, the company look back on what it has achieved and think about its future plans.
Unsupported old Devices
Talking about Android mobile phones, devices running on Android 2.1 (Eclair) and Android 2.2 (Froyo) will not get the support of this amazing chatting app. As per the recent report, only 0.1 percent of Android devices will be affected by this step. Now, coming to the iOS devices running on iOS 6 or below will not be served by WhatsApp. If the Apple’s October 2016 data is to be believed, 8 percent of devices run on iOS 9 or below, which clearly means that the total number of devices running on iOS 6 will be very less. In addition, if you are a user of Windows 7 Phone, then from the next year you won’t be able to use WhatsApp on your phone. On the other hand, Blackberry 10, Symbian S60 and Nokia S40 all will get the WhatsApp support till June 2017. Blackberry sold 7 million phones in the year 2014 alone, which means that there must be numerous people who will be affected by the decision. Hence, it can be said that the messaging app will end on several phones mainly because all these above-mentioned smartphones do not offer the kind of capabilities required to expand the features of the application in the future.
So, all those people who are using affected phones should get newer ones before the year ends. According to WhatsApp, this was a very tough decision, but definitely the right one so as to give people much better ways to keep in touch with friends and family. So, if your phone comes under the category of the soon-to-be-unsupported operating system, upgrade to a newer phone immediately.
