BACtrackSkyn: World’s First Wearable Alcohol Biosensor

The impact of technology on our everyday life has been enormous.

It all began in the early 1920’s with the introduction of the television set, a technological advancement like no other. Almost a century later, the world was introduced to the BACtrackSkyn, a wearable blood alcohol content measuring device which could bring an end to the old-fashioned instruments like the breathalyzers and other tedious procedures like blood tests for measuring alcohol levels in the blood.

The Need:

Owing to the success of several healthcare advancements like the Fitbit, BACtrack wanted to design their product in a way such that it not only had improvements on the technical front, but also carried a modern built enabling it to be worn like a wristband facilitating real-time monitoring of data. This would also make it look discreet, less bulky and would appeal better to the general public.

The Solution:

Facing a challenge of such decree, BACtrack got its best minds working on the Skyn, a device which would be both technically advanced as well as captivating to attract customers. The finalized model of the BACtrackSkyncheck marked every point on the list, it was cost effective and wearable, very similar to a wristband and monitored alcohol levels in the blood. Equipped with BACtrack’s proprietary algorithm, the results of the Transdermal Alcohol Content (TAC) will be continuously uploaded to an iOS device via Bluetooth and these figures could then be analyzed and interpreted based on the user’s historical Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) data. The Skyn, once activated could generate data with a sample frequency of one second. In this one second, the user’s BAC data will be sent from the Skyn to an iOS device and also to a cloud server for storage, if needed.

How It Works:

When consumed, a large percentage of the alcohol is processed by the body. However, a minor portion in the form of ethanol, a highly volatile component of alcohol tends to escape through the skin. The device uses an electrochemical sensor to track the biomolecule, ethanol and converts the release into an electrical signal which can be converted into a BAC reading.

Other Features:

Being the premium product of a renowned company like BACtrack, the Skyn was packed with features. The device as a part of its continuous monitoring, could generate a warning signal whenever you have a few drinks extra which could save you from the cops if you’re driving. It could also notify a family member whenever the BAC levels rise, giving them ample time to drive you home or arrange a cab for you.


As a participant in the Wearable Alcohol Biosensor Challenge issued by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), a subset of the National Institute of Health (NIH), the BACtrackSkyn was declared the winner and the company were awarded the grand prize of $200,000 for its invention.
